This is a problem - during the climb phase, enabling VNAV sets the autopilot to the approach altitude and the autothrottle to the approach speed. During the cruise phase, however there is no problem - VNAV simply maintains cruise altitude and speed as set.

Attached are a couple of images taken during the climb phase. LNAV is enabled, VNAV is not.

The first image shows the panel before pressing VNAV: the aircraft is climbing through 11600 feet for cruise altitude of FL290. An altitude and speed restriction is set for BUDEE in the Smiths FMS for 150 knots and 2000 feet.

The second image shows what happens after enabling VNAV: the FMS has set the altitude to 2000 feet, and the speed to 150 knots, and the aircraft is on its way down, even though we are in the climb phase.

I can not imagine what could be causing this, but it does happen consistently. I have also seen it happen that without any speed/altitude restrictions, and VNAV enabled, when a speed/altitude restriction is then entered into the FMS, it will start a descent in the same manner as explained above. I have not encountered this behavior if VNAV is enabled during the cruise phase.

She wants to be a 2000ft, Because you commanded her to be at 2000ft.

It seems this was a short hop. OK



Notice BUDEE is activated at 2000ft, But what happened to LIT and AGOTE. There was no Altitude activated on your climb,
Only BUDEE for your Descent. So actually on the INIT PAGE it was set for 2000ft.

Whatever climb or descent the FMC gives you on your flightplan. Confirm it by activation. Once again whatever altitude you confirm, She will be there.
