The ultimate .gau size limit is about 490 MB.
But again, there are addon gauges, 2 to 3 times larger than the isg gauge. Some addons (Ex: iFLY737) have multiple gauges in the panel that each are larger than the ISG gauge. The iFLY 737's throttle gauge (16MB) is as large as the ISG gauge.
It doesn't seem that the gauge size by itself would be the direct cause of the problem here.

You are really going to have to provide more information here.
Your system specs for one. Two, the name of the add-on aircraft that you used The location in FSX (and any addon scenery installed at the time) Your display settings in FSX. what does the resource manager say FSX's memory usage is the 1st and 2nd time the same aircraft is loaded with and without ISG installed ?
IOW provide details a reproduceable scenario can be tested with.
