All of a sudden, FS Build won't start. I've read the other threads, and I'll read them again to see if I missed something that might help, but this seems to go a bit further, I think. I decided to uninstall FS Build, pain though I guess it will be to get it back to where I want it.

Unfortunately, I can't seem to reinstall now. I cannot use ANY of my backup installers (there are three of them, one on an external hard drive, and two on CDs). Windows won't even let me move the files. All I get is "Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item." This only happens with the FSBuildSetup2.exe (that's the original installer, isn't it?). Other files behave normally.

On top of that, I can't even download the installer from Simmarket. It gets to about 21 MB (96%) and stops cold. Avast gives an alert, but once I clear that, it continues coming down until it reaches 96%. I have submitted a ticket with Simmarket about that one.

I am in the process of switching over to a Wide FS configuration, so I guess something therein triggered this. But it's not Wide FS itself, far as I can tell. I did fire up FS Build to give it the new path to Active Sky, and it imported winds and built a plan just like normal. All I've done since then is uninstall and reinstall on the client machine various do-dads like FS Commander, Radar Contact, and Pro Flight Emulator and Squawkbox. I haven't touched FS Build.

Sorry to write a short story here. But this is a little disturbing. Anyone have any idea what the heck happened here? I sure don't.

Thanks!

Matt

Chances are you are correct.
Wide and new configurations.

Are you using WinXP or Vista?

XP Professional, fully updated (as of last night, anyway). Something just occurred to me, but I won't be able to check it until I get home tonight. The computer I'm using as the client used to be my FS machine a couple of years ago. It might still have FS Build on it. Could that be causing a conflict?

And if it is on there, and if it runs, can I just use that installation instead? Will I be able to export over to the FS machine? I'd guess so, since they're networked, but if not maybe someone can wave me off ahead of time.

Kind of strange, though, that I can't move or use any of my backups of the installer. Something got out of whack in the registry, maybe?

Thanks for the response :)

Matt

Matt,
I do not know .. you may have to start all over in troubleshooting.

But, it does not appear to be a problem with FSBuild at this time.

If it doesn't start one of the controls it needs is no longer registered.

I suspect the reason the Installer stopped is when it tried to re-register the controls it was unable to.

This sort of issue has come up before, and in almost every instance it was merely a symptom of another system related problem.

There's no one thing to point to for sure, but in the past it has been things like security/privilege changes, Viruses, spyware, a new hardware device installed, an O/S upgrade, corrupted Harddisk etc etc.

Regards.
Ernie.

One other possibility occurred to me. I did a virus and spyware scan after I hooked up the new machine, and as usual Avast found something it didn't like in the FS Build installer. Normally I just let it pass, but this time I might have accidentally moved or changed something, or maybe a new spyware scanner I used did something I don't know about. Well, I'll figure it out somehow. Thanks again!
